Brown's Dairy is a very old and well-known business located in the Central City area of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. It first opened its doors way back in 1905. For many years, it was known as Brown's Velvet Dairy.

A Look Back at Brown's Dairy

Brown's Velvet Dairy was once the oldest and biggest dairy company in New Orleans. It provided milk and other dairy products to a large area, including the Gulf States. They made delicious ice cream with unique flavors, like one that tasted like Creole cream cheese.

Changes Over Time

In 1993, a company called Marigold Foods bought the ice cream part of Brown's Velvet. They wanted to add Brown's ice cream to their own line of frozen treats, called Kemps. However, Brown's Dairy kept its milk business.

To continue operating in New Orleans, Brown's Dairy worked out an agreement with the city. Later, another company called Southern Foods Group bought Brown's Dairy. This group also bought two other local dairy companies, Barbe's and Walker-Roemer.

Who Owns Brown's Dairy Now?

Today, Brown's Dairy is part of a larger company called Dean Foods. This means that Brown's Dairy products are now a brand under the Dean Foods company.
