Daktyla (pronounced Dahk-tee-lah) is a special kind of bread from Greece. It is also very popular in Cyprus and Turkey. The name "Daktyla" means "fingers" in Greek. This is because the bread looks like a row of fingers.
What is Daktyla?
Daktyla is a type of "country" or "village" bread. This means it is made using traditional recipes. It has a unique shape that looks like several bread "fingers" joined together.
How it Gets its Shape
The finger shape is made in two main ways:
- Bakers might make deep cuts across a loaf before baking.
- They might place small rolls of dough side-by-side. These rolls then stick together when the dough rises. This rising process is called proving.
Special Ingredients
Daktyla is usually made with a special kind of flour. This "country" flour is a mix of different wheat flours. It also includes fine cornmeal. The cornmeal gives the bread a light yellow color.
The top of the bread is often sprinkled with seeds. These include sesame seeds and nigella seeds. Some recipes even mix nigella seeds into the dough itself.
