Dragon is a famous character from the Shrek movies. At first, people think she is a scary villain who guards Princess Fiona. But then, it turns out she is a female dragon looking for a friend.

Even though she is left behind when Shrek escapes, she later becomes his friend. She also becomes the partner of Shrek's best buddy, Donkey. Dragon helps them defeat the bad guy, Lord Farquaad, by eating him! She has been in every Shrek movie. In Shrek Forever After, a version of her from another world is a villain again. She also appears in spin-off shows and is often a puppet in stage plays like Shrek the Musical.

Dragon is very well-known in pop culture. Many people see her as a funny take on the dragons often found in Disney movies. Critics have praised her look and her role. Some even liked how she was unexpectedly kind and heroic. They saw it as a cool twist on the old story of a male knight saving a princess from a dragon.

What Dragon Looks Like

Dragon looks like the dragons you might read about in old European stories. She has shiny, red scales and leathery wings like a bat. She also has long, pointy ears and bony spikes on her jaw. Along her back, she has a row of spines. Her eyes have vertical slit pupils, which means they look like thin lines. She also has a long tail that can grab things.

Dragon does not speak words, but she uses her body language to show how she feels. This means she uses her movements and actions to communicate. Like her partner Donkey, she is never given a real name in the movies. In one scene, Donkey calls her "Elizabeth." Because of this, many fans think that is her name, but it might just be a joke.

Dragon's Personality

Dragon has a "tender-hearted" personality. This means she is kind and gentle, even though she does not get many visitors. She burns any knights she sees right away, probably because she is so lonely. Just like Princess Fiona, Dragon is often alone. She even puts on lipstick because she hopes to find a romantic partner.

Dragon's Movie Adventures

Her First Appearance

Dragon's job is to guard Princess Fiona in her lonely castle. When Shrek tries to rescue the princess, Donkey finds himself face-to-face with Dragon. Donkey learns that Dragon is female and starts to flatter her. He says nice things to distract her. Dragon becomes very interested in him, even though Donkey does not feel the same way at first.

She picks him up gently in her teeth and carries him to her room. There, she wraps him in her tail and flirts with him. Shrek soon comes back to save Donkey. The three of them escape from Dragon's castle, leaving her chained and sad. Dragon is not seen again until later in the movie. She escapes and leaves Fiona's volcanic home. She and Donkey make up, and she helps Shrek save Fiona from marrying Lord Farquaad. Dragon gets rid of Farquaad by swallowing him whole.

Later Adventures

Dragon is not in much of Shrek 2. But before this movie, she becomes one of Shrek's best friends. At the start of the film, Donkey says that she had been "all moody and stuff" lately. This explains why he showed up at Shrek's swamp without telling anyone. Dragon fully appears in a scene after the movie's credits. She arrives with six young "dronkeys." These are baby hybrids that are part dragon and part donkey. They meet their clueless father, Donkey, for the first time.

In Shrek the Third, Dragon and her young dronkeys stay with Fiona and the other princesses. They wait for Shrek to come back. When Prince Charming attacks Far Far Away, Dragon is caught. She is trapped by a large iron chain cast net. Her dronkey babies are also caught and put in jail. At the end of the movie, Dragon helps defeat Prince Charming. She knocks over a stone stage prop keep on top of him. Later, she is seen in Shrek's swamp while Shrek and Fiona take care of their ogre triplets.

In the last movie of the series, Shrek Forever After, Dragon appears briefly at the beginning. She shows up again later in a parallel universe. In this other world, she never met Donkey. She was captured by Rumpelstiltskin. She tries to eat Shrek and Fiona. Even though Donkey tries to be romantic, she almost eats him before Puss in Boots saves him. The Dragon from this other world ends up with a muzzle and chains. She fades away as the real world is fixed. At the end of the movie, she is shown to be back to her normal self.

Other Appearances

Shrek 4-D

Dragon helps Shrek and Donkey get away from a dragon statue that came to life. Dragon tries to fight the creature and wins. She tricks it into a narrow tunnel where its wings get scraped off. Dragon folds her wings close to her body to fit through. Then, she burns Farquaad's ghost with her fire breath.

On Stage

Dragon also appeared in the stage musical version of the movie. This show was on Broadway from 2008 to 2010. She was a large puppet controlled by an actor named John Tartaglia.
