Dubautia kalalauensis is a very rare flowering plant. It belongs to the aster family, which includes daisies and sunflowers. This special plant is found only in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai.

There is only one small group of these plants known in the world. This group has just 26 plants! Because it is so rare, the United States government listed it as an endangered species in 2010. This means it is protected by law to help it survive. Like other plants in its group, it is also called na`ena`e.

What is Dubautia kalalauensis?

This plant is part of a unique group called the silversword alliance. These plants are found only in Hawaii. Until 2005, Dubautia kalalauensis was thought to be part of a different species, Dubautia laxa. But then, scientists studied it closely and realized it was a new, separate species.

Where Does It Live?

This rare plant grows in wet mountain forests. It lives in the understory, which is the area beneath taller trees. It often grows under ʻōhiʻa lehua trees. These trees are very common in Hawaii. You can find Dubautia kalalauensis in the Kalalau Valley on Kauai.

What Does It Look Like?

Dubautia kalalauensis can grow as a shrub or a small tree. Its leaves grow in pairs, opposite each other on the stem. The plant produces special flower heads. These are clusters of small flowers that look like one big flower. The flowers themselves are a creamy color with a hint of green.
