Edith Gillian Harrison (1898–1974) was a talented British architect. She was one of the first women to study architecture at a famous school in London. She helped open doors for other women in this field.
A Pioneer in Architecture
Gillian Harrison started her architecture training in 1917. She went to the Architectural Association School of Architecture. This was a big deal because she was one of the first four female students there. She finished her studies in 1922.
Breaking Barriers
In 1931, Gillian Harrison made history. She became the first woman to be a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). This is a very important group for architects in Britain. It showed how skilled and respected she was.
Designing Homes
Gillian Harrison designed many buildings. One famous house she designed was 'Red Willows' in Kent, England, in 1933. This house was in a place called Littlestone. She also designed three other houses nearby for different clients.
Family and Work
In 1923, Gillian married Harry St John Harrison. He was also an architect. Together, they started their own architecture business called Cooke & Harrison. They worked on many projects together. They had one son, named Richard.
