The Grevillea fistulosa, also known as the Barrens grevillea, is a special type of bush found only in a small part of Western Australia. It belongs to a group of plants called Grevillea. This plant is native to the southern coast, in areas known as the Great Southern and Goldfields-Esperance regions.

What Does the Barrens Grevillea Look Like?

This bush stands tall, usually growing between 0.6 and 2 meters (about 2 to 6.5 feet) high. Its branches are smooth and don't have a waxy coating.

Its Leaves

The leaves of the Barrens grevillea are simple and flat. They are shaped like an oval or a long, narrow line. Each leaf can be 40 to 90 millimeters (about 1.5 to 3.5 inches) long and 3 to 15 millimeters (about 0.1 to 0.6 inches) wide.

Its Flowers

You can see this plant bloom from July to December. It produces beautiful flower clusters at the end of its branches. These flowers are usually red or orange and have an interesting, irregular shape.

Its Fruit

After the flowers, the plant grows a ribbed or ridged fruit. This fruit is oval-shaped and hairy, measuring about 12 to 18 millimeters (about 0.5 to 0.7 inches) long. The Barrens grevillea can only grow new plants from its seeds.

Where Does the Barrens Grevillea Grow?

The Grevillea fistulosa likes to grow in rocky or stony areas. It especially thrives in soils that contain quartzite and granite. You can find it among medium-sized trees or in tall shrubland and heath areas.

This plant is mostly found in the Fitzgerald IBRA sub-region. It grows particularly on or around the Barren and Whoogarup Range, which are located within the Fitzgerald River National Park.
