Discovering Grevillea scabrida

What Does It Look Like?

This amazing shrub usually grows to be about 0.6 to 1.5 meters (2 to 5 feet) tall. Its branches are not covered in a waxy, bluish layer. It has simple, flat leaves that are long and narrow, like a line. These leaves can be from 16 to 60 millimeters (about 0.6 to 2.4 inches) long and 0.5 to 1.6 millimeters (about 0.02 to 0.06 inches) wide.

In July, the Grevillea scabrida starts to bloom. Its flowers grow in clusters called an inflorescence. These flowers can be green, white, or yellow, and they have white or pink styles (the part of the flower that helps with reproduction). After the flowers, the plant grows interesting fruits. These fruits are oval-shaped, have ridges, and are a bit hairy. They are about 9 to 11.5 millimeters (0.35 to 0.45 inches) long.

This plant looks a bit like another plant called Grevillea lissopleura. However, the Grevillea scabrida has special red, angular branches that help you tell them apart.

How It Reproduces

The Grevillea scabrida has a unique way of growing new plants. It can only reproduce from its seeds. This means that new plants will only sprout from seeds, not from other parts of the plant like cuttings.

Where Does It Grow?

You can find Grevillea scabrida growing among tall or short trees in scrubland areas. It likes to grow in different types of soil, including gravelly, loamy (a mix of sand, silt, and clay), or clay soils. It also thrives on ironstone plains, which are flat areas with a lot of iron in the soil. It especially prefers places that get wet during the winter.

This plant is only found in a small area of Western Australia. You can see it from Mount Singleton all the way to the Mount Gibson Sanctuary area, which is located between the towns of Wubin and Paynes Find, Western Australia.
