Hezekiah Joslyn (1797-1865) was an American doctor. He was also a strong supporter of the abolitionist movement. This movement worked to end slavery in the United States.

Early Life and Medical Career

Hezekiah Joslyn was born in Cicero, New York, in 1797. He became a doctor in Onondaga County, New York, after 1823. By 1865, he was an important officer in the county's medical society.

Joslyn lived on a large piece of land in Cicero. Today, this land is considered an important historical site.

Fighting for Freedom

Hezekiah Joslyn was a key figure in the fight against slavery. He helped start the Liberty Party. This was an early political party formed in the 1840s. Its main goal was to end slavery.

Joslyn's home in Fayetteville, New York, was a secret stop on the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a network of safe houses. It helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North.

His tombstone in Cicero proudly states, "AN EARLY ABOLITIONIST." This shows how important his work was.

Family Connections

Hezekiah Joslyn's daughter was Matilda Joslyn Gage. She was also a dedicated abolitionist. Matilda also fought for women's right to vote. People who supported this cause were called suffragists.

Matilda Joslyn Gage was the mother-in-law of L. Frank Baum. He is famous for writing the classic book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
