Description: BTR1 recorder (1948–1954) For many years EMI built its own equipment, such as the BTR1, as it had a large facility for research and manufacturing in Hayes (just outside London). Made of iron and steel, the BTR1 is a brute of machine, weighting in at almost 600 pounds. These machines were used all over the Abbey Road building starting in 1948. Initially, they worked simultaneously with the older disc-cutting equipment, which was the studios' only recording method begore the advent of tape. BTR stands for British Tape Recorder. It was quite a success, with hundreds of units being built and used worldwide by EMI studios and the BBC. It was the workhorse machine for most Abbey Road recordings from the 1950s and '60s. The studio engineers devised clever ways of creating audio effects by manipulating the BTR 2 recorder functions. This created echo, doubling, and 'flanging' effects. The BTR2 machine was responsible for many of the psychedelic effects of the late 1960s.
