Description: Schematic of the directional solidification process. Molten metal is placed in a form within a furnace. The form is slowly drawn out of the furnace, into a coolant. As a temperature gradient develops across the form, crystal growth is initiated on the bottom of the form, and slowly propogates upwards as the form is withdrawn into the coolant.
