Description: All the chipmunks are snuggled in their beds I presume. Last summer there were several around our yard and regularly looked for seeds under the bird feeder next to our small patio. This guy filled his cheeks full and then found a shady spot to enjoy in finds last summer while I watched from a chair. The genus name Tamias is Greek for "treasurer", "steward", or "housekeeper", which is a reference to the animals' role in plant dispersal through their habit of collecting and storing food for winter use. The common name originally may have been spelled "chitmunk," from the native Odawa (Ottawa) word jidmoonh, meaning "red squirrel" (cf. Ojibwe, ajidamoo). (Wikipedia)
