Description: Wooden relief sculpted overmantel in Great Potheridge House, Merton, Devon, England. Possibly not in its original location but moved here from another room following partial demolition of much of the house in 1734. The house was built circa 1660 by General George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608–1700). It depicts within a wreath of flowers, against a background of an elaborate antique trophy of arms, five putti, two of which, in flight, hold between them a crown. This is an allusion to the crowning of King Charles II in 1660 following the Restoration of the Monarchy largely engineered by Monck. (Pevsner, Nikolaus & Cherry, Bridget, The Buildings of England: Devon, London, 2004, p.460) At top left is a cartouche showing the armorials of Monck
