Image: Solar Miller Style Stirling layout
Description: The top view of a Solar Miller layout of Stirling engine showing 2 rotating displacers (vertical in red) powering a double acting piston (horizontally connecting the two displacers.) The heat source in this variation, even though this was originally conceived as solar powered, is shown as a gas burner pipe visible to the right of the displacers. The radiator would cover the displacers, so it was omitted. The Miller cycle, in which working fluid is allowed past the piston at the end of the stroke, facilitates initial pressurization, eliminates pressure imbalances and pre-loads the upcoming power stroke.
