Description: A part of the historical frieze in the Hall of Heroes of the Voortrekker Monument, Pretoria. It depicts a wounded voortrekker at the Battle of Vegkop on October 16, 1836. The boy and woman in the background are carrying gunpowder in powder-horns. The Battle of Vegkop involved an attack by 6,000 Ndebeles on the trek of Hendrik Potgieter. Though failing to penetrate the laager the Ndebeles raided all the cattle, oxen and horses. The Trekkers were assisted by the Rolong tribe who supplied them with oxen to continue the trek, a scene depicted on an adjacent frieze.
