Joseph Raymond Hillaire (1894–1967) was a talented Native American artist. His tribal name was Kwul-kwul’tw. He was a member of the Lummi tribe, also known as the Lhaq’temish people. Joseph Hillaire was famous for carving amazing totem poles. He created these in the special style of the Coast Salish peoples.

In 1961, Joseph Hillaire carved a very important totem pole. It was called the Kobe-Seattle Sister City Friendship Pole. This pole helped show the friendship between the cities of Kobe in Japan and Seattle in the United States. Joseph Hillaire also had a daughter named Pauline Hillaire Scälla. Born in 1929, she became a well-known expert in art history. She also worked as a conservator, which means she helped protect and repair old artworks. Her special focus was on the art of the Northwest Coast peoples.

Joseph Hillaire was also an active member of the Baháʼí Faith. This is a religion that teaches about peace and unity. He was part of his local Spiritual Assembly, which is like a governing council for the Baháʼí community.
