A Glimpse into Kápolnásnyék's Past
Even thousands of years ago, people lived in the area around Kápolnásnyék. Scientists have found ancient tools and items from the Bronze Age here. This shows that the village has been a home for a very long time!
How Kápolnásnyék Got Its Name
The name Kápolnásnyék comes from the "Nyék" tribe. These were some of the first Hungarian tribes to settle in Hungary. The very first people who lived here were likely part of this tribe.
The village was first mentioned in official records in 1193. Back then, it was called "Neck." Over time, its name changed to Kápolnás Nyék, Káposztás Nyék, and Fertőfő Nyék. It was a small but important spot between the big cities of Buda and Fehérvár.
Challenges and Changes Over Time
During the time of the Turkish occupation, Kápolnásnyék faced tough times. Because it was a border village, people had to pay taxes to both the Hungarians and the Turkish Empire! This made life very difficult.
The number of people living in the village dropped a lot. In fact, in 1543, it became completely empty for a while. But people started to return in 1772, bringing life back to the village.
In the 1800s, the village grew and changed. A railway was built in 1861, connecting Kápolnásnyék to other places. By 1871, it was officially recognized as its own independent village.
A Famous Poet's Home
Kápolnásnyék is famous for being the birthplace of Mihály Vörösmarty (1800–1855). He was a very important Hungarian poet. You can even visit the house where he grew up, which is now a museum dedicated to him!
Modern Kápolnásnyék
In the 1930s, Kápolnásnyék started to look more like it does today. It became a hub for tourists visiting Lake Velencei. New services like a phone system, doctors, and a railway station were added to help visitors and locals.
However, the village suffered a lot during World War II. Many people died, and the village was badly damaged. For a while, it didn't grow as fast as other places nearby. In the 1970s, it even became part of the nearby town of Velence.
But Kápolnásnyék didn't stay down for long! In 1990, the village declared its independence again. Since then, it has grown a lot. It's once again a popular place for tourism around Lake Velencei, with new shops and services appearing all the time. The village's roads and other important systems are also improving quickly.
