Kaikilani was a powerful woman in ancient Hawaiʻi. She was known as an Aliʻi Nui, which means a supreme ruler or high chief. Her story is special because she was the first chiefess in Hawaiian history to rule the entire island of Hawaiʻi.
Her Marriage and the Throne
Kaikilani was married to Lonoikamakahiki. He was the heir, or next in line, to become the king of Hawaiʻi island. When the old king passed away, Lonoikamakahiki felt he was not yet ready to take on the big responsibility of ruling. He wanted to become very skilled in martial arts and fighting first.
Stepping Up to Rule
Because Lonoikamakahiki was not ready, Kaikilani bravely stepped forward. She took his place and became the ruler of Hawaiʻi island. This was a very unusual and important event. She was the first woman to hold such a high position of power in Hawaiian history.
