Mount Grosvenor is a tall mountain in Alaska, United States. It stands about 8,400 feet (2,560 meters) high. You can find it in the Alaska Range, which is a big group of mountains. This mountain is part of the amazing Denali National Park and Preserve.

Mount Grosvenor is located on the west side of the Ruth Gorge. It's quite close to two other mountains: Mount Church to its southeast and Mount Johnson to its north. Even though it's not the tallest peak around, it's famous for its east face. This side of the mountain is a huge, sheer rock wall made of Granite, rising over 4,000 feet straight up!

Naming Mount Grosvenor

This mountain was given its unofficial name by a famous explorer named Dr. Frederick Cook. He explored the area in the early 1900s.

The mountain honors Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor (1875–1966). He was a very important person in the world of photography and magazines.

Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor was the President of the National Geographic Society. This society is well-known for its amazing photos and stories about the world. He is also known as the "father of photojournalism". This means he helped make taking photos for news and stories a big deal.

Grosvenor was also the first full-time editor of National Geographic magazine. This magazine shares incredible pictures and articles about nature, science, and cultures from all over the globe.

Climbing Mount Grosvenor

The very first time someone successfully climbed to the top of Mount Grosvenor was in 1979. A team of four climbers made this historic first ascent. They were Gary Bocarde, Charlie Head, John Lee, and Jon Thomas.

Weather and Climate

Mount Grosvenor is in a subarctic climate zone. This means the area has very long, cold, and snowy winters. The summers are cool, but not warm.

During winter, temperatures can drop really low, sometimes below -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). With the wind, it can feel even colder, below -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit). If you want to visit or climb, the best time is usually from May through June. The weather is most favorable then.
