Mount Sir Douglas is a tall mountain found right on the edge between Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. It sits on the Continental Divide, which is like a natural line that separates where water flows either to the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean.

This impressive peak is one of the highest in both provinces. It's the 18th tallest mountain in Alberta and the 28th tallest in British Columbia. The mountain got its name in 1916. It was named after a famous military leader, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig.

How Mount Sir Douglas Was Formed

Mount Sir Douglas is made up of different kinds of sedimentary rock. This rock formed over millions of years, from the Precambrian time all the way to the Jurassic period. Imagine ancient shallow seas where layers of sand, mud, and tiny sea creatures settled and hardened into rock.

Later, huge forces deep within the Earth pushed these rock layers. During an event called the Laramide orogeny, these rocks were lifted and folded. They were even pushed over the top of younger rock layers. This process created the towering mountains we see today, including Mount Sir Douglas.

Understanding the Climate

The weather around Mount Sir Douglas is part of a subarctic climate zone. This means the area has very cold and snowy winters. Summers, on the other hand, are usually mild.

During winter, temperatures can often drop below −20 degrees Celsius. When you add the wind chill, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 degrees Celsius. This climate is typical for high mountains in the Canadian Rockies.
