History of Murphy
Murphy got its name from a local family who lived there. A post office was opened in Murphy in 1894. It helped people send and receive mail for about 12 years. The post office closed in 1906.
Geography and Location
Murphy is located in the northern part of Jefferson County. Its northern edge is right next to the border of St. Louis County.
A main road, Missouri Route 30, goes through Murphy. This road can take you to bigger cities. If you drive northeast for about 19 miles (30 kilometers), you will reach downtown St. Louis. If you head southwest for about 35 miles (56 kilometers), you will arrive in St. Clair.
The total area of Murphy is about 3.9 square miles (10.1 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
