Life of Muskogee Yargee Ross
Muskogee Yargee was born in the 1840s. Her birthplace was near the Canadian River in Indian Territory. This area is now part of Oklahoma. Her parents were Captain Checartah Yargee and Millie McQueen.
Her father was a Creek planter. He moved from Alabama to Indian Territory before Muskogee was born. This move happened because of the Indian Removal Act. He brought many enslaved people with him. Muskogee learned to speak and read English at school.
Family and Community
In 1864, Muskogee Yargee married Joshua Ross. He was a successful businessman. His family was a well-known Cherokee family. They raised nine children together. This included her niece and nephew.
The Ross family helped build the town of Muskogee, Oklahoma. They were seen as pioneers. They also helped start the First United Methodist Church of Muskogee. A street in the town, Muskogee Street, was partly named after her.
Muskogee Yargee Ross was very active in her church. She was also known for her home remedies. She passed away in Muskogee in 1913. She was about 70 years old.
