The Nebo Hill Archeological Site is a very important historical place. It is a large hill located a few miles southwest of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. This hill is the highest point in Clay County.

People have different ideas about how Nebo Hill got its name. One idea is that it was named after a family who owned the land in the 1900s. Another idea is that its name comes from Mount Nebo in Jordan, a famous mountain mentioned in the Bible.

Discovering Ancient Life at Nebo Hill

Nebo Hill is now a large archaeological site. This means it is a place where scientists called archaeologists study human history. They dig carefully to find old objects and learn about people who lived long ago. Many ancient objects from Native American cultures have been found here.

The Mysterious Nebo Hill Culture

The ancient people who lived here are known as the Nebo Hill culture. They lived along the Fishing River, which flows into the Missouri River. This culture was active from about 3,000 to 1,000 BCE. That's a very long time ago!

These people made special tools. Their unique spearheads and axes are easy to recognize. These tools are sometimes called the Nebo Hill axe. They have been found in places as far north as Canada. Archaeologists have also found many pieces of ancient pottery at the site.

Connecting to Other Ancient Sites

The Nebo Hill culture is part of a period called the Late Archaic period in North America. This was a time when people hunted, gathered food, and started to settle in certain areas. Objects from the Nebo Hill culture have also been found at the Renner Site. This site is located near Riverside, Missouri.

Scientists believe the Nebo Hill culture was the ancestor of the later Kansas City Hopewellian culture. This means the Nebo Hill people were an earlier group from whom the Hopewellian culture developed.
