How Prescott Park Began
Prescott Park was created thanks to two amazing sisters, Josie and Sarah Prescott. They were public school teachers who lived in Portsmouth. In 1940, they decided to donate the land for the park to the city.
A Dream for the Waterfront
The sisters used money they inherited to buy many properties along the Piscataqua River. This area used to be a busy industrial place. It had become quite run-down and not very nice. Josie and Sarah had a big dream. They wanted to create a public park right on the water. Their goal was for everyone to be able to visit the park for free.
Making the Park Happen
The Prescott sisters worked hard to clear the land. They wanted to turn the old industrial area into a beautiful green space. In 1949, a special fund called the Prescott sisters' trust was set up. It had $500,000 to help take care of the park. This money helped make sure the park would stay beautiful for years to come.
