The first European-American settlers arrived in this area in 1837. They called their new home Clear Creek. One of the very first people to settle here was Calvin Boone.
A man named Merchant built the first water mill in the area. He also helped create a road that followed a ridge, leading to another settlement called Shiloh. Many early settlers came to Puckett from Alabama.
In 1890, A.A. Burnham wanted to open a post office. He suggested the names Clear Creek or Burnham. However, these names were already in use. So, the United States Postal Service decided to name the post office Puckett. This name honored the Puckett family, who had moved there from nearby Tishomingo.
Long ago, a traveling show used to spend its winters in Puckett. People came from all around to see their performances. This made the town famous and earned it the nickname "the largest little show place in the world." In the 1950s, a sign was put up that said, "Welcome to Puckett 300 good friendly folks and a few old sore heads."
