Who Was Rudravarman?
Rudravarman was the son of King Jayavarman Kaundinya. His mother was not the main queen. After his father passed away, Rudravarman became king in the year 514. He took control of the kingdom during a time of change.
Becoming King of Funan
When Rudravarman became king, he faced some challenges. There was a struggle for power with his stepmother, Queen Kulaprabhavati. She had support from others who did not want Rudravarman to rule. This struggle lasted until at least the year 517. Despite these challenges, Rudravarman kept his position as king.
Rudravarman's Ties to China
King Rudravarman wanted to have good relationships with other powerful countries. He sent many special messengers, called embassies, to China. These trips happened in the years 517, 519, 520, 530, 535, and 539. These visits helped Funan and China stay connected.
Rudravarman even made a special offer to the Emperor of China. He said he would give the Emperor a hair of Buddha. This was a very valuable religious item. In return, he asked the Emperor to send a famous monk named Che Yun Pao to Funan. This shows how important religion and diplomacy were during his rule.
