What is Sunnyslope?
Sunnyslope is a two-and-a-half-story house. It was designed in the Gothic Revival style. This means it looks a bit like old castles or churches from the Middle Ages. The house was also built in a "Picturesque mode." This means it was made to look like a beautiful scene from a painting.
Who Built Sunnyslope?
The house was built by Peter Hoe around 1860. Peter Hoe was the brother of a famous inventor named Richard March Hoe. The Hoe family owned a large piece of land where Sunnyslope was built. It was their family estate.
A Home with Many Stories
Over the years, Sunnyslope has had different owners and purposes.
- In 1919, the Hoe family sold the house.
- It was bought by Temple Beth Elohim, which is a Jewish temple.
- Later, it became home to an African Methodist Episcopal congregation. This church is called Bright Temple A.M.E. Church.

- In 1983, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places across the whole country that are important to history. Being on these lists helps protect the house so it can be enjoyed for many more years.
