Planning the Show

Planning the Super Bowl halftime show is a big deal! For the 2015 show, artists like Coldplay, Rihanna, and Katy Perry were considered. Katy Perry ended up being the main performer that year.

In 2015, rumors started about who would perform at Super Bowl 50. Some names mentioned were Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, and One Direction. Later, it was thought that Bruno Mars might organize the show. Then, the band Maroon 5 was in talks, but they said it wasn't true at the time. Maroon 5 would later headline the Super Bowl LIII halftime show.

In late 2015, news came out that several artists would perform together. On December 3, 2015, Coldplay was officially announced as the main act. This was just one day before their new album, A Head Full of Dreams, came out. Later, it was confirmed that Beyoncé and Bruno Mars would join Coldplay as special guests.

How the Stars Joined Forces

When Chris Martin, Coldplay's singer, first called Bruno Mars, Mars wasn't sure about performing with many artists. So, Martin invited Mars to his music studio. There, Martin told Mars his idea: he wanted Mars to sing "Uptown Funk" with Beyoncé.

Mars was still a bit unsure. He asked Martin to talk to Beyoncé to see what she thought. Martin quickly sent a video to Beyoncé. In the video, he and Mars sang a song asking her to join them at the Super Bowl. Beyoncé happily agreed!

The day before the big performance, Bruno Mars saw Beyoncé backstage. She was eating a bag of Cheetos. Mars asked her, "That's what you're doing?" Beyoncé replied that there was nothing more they could do to prepare. She said it would be what it would be, so she was going to enjoy her Cheetos. Mars said he learned a lot watching Beyoncé get ready. He realized she always gives her best performance, so he needed to bring his "A-game" too.

The show began with Chris Martin singing the start of Coldplay's song "Yellow". Then, the rest of Coldplay joined him. They played "Viva la Vida", "Paradise", and "Adventure of a Lifetime". They were joined by the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, led by Gustavo Dudamel, and the University of California Marching Band.

Next, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, and their dancers took the stage. The dancers were dressed in a style similar to Michael Jackson. They performed the hit song "Uptown Funk".

Then, Beyoncé appeared with her dancers. She wore a bodysuit like Michael Jackson's and her dancers were dressed like Black Panthers. She performed her new song "Formation" with an amazing choreographed dance. After that, she joined Bruno Mars on stage to sing a part of "Uptown Funk" together.

Coldplay then played a short part of "Clocks" before moving into "Fix You". During this, Chris Martin sang along to a video montage. This video showed clips from past Super Bowl halftime shows and national anthem performances. It featured famous artists like Bruce Springsteen, Missy Elliott, Katy Perry, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, James Brown, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, The Black Eyed Peas, U2, Prince, Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars.

The show ended with Coldplay performing "Up&Up". Beyoncé, Mars, and everyone else who performed joined in. At the very end, the audience held up colored cards. This created a beautiful rainbow and spelled out the words "Believe in love" across the stadium.
