Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Imagine you need to tell the truth about something important. That's what testimony is! It's a serious statement about something being true. You might hear about testimony in a law court or in religion. The word 'testimony' comes from an old Latin word, testis, which means 'witness'. It's like someone who sees something happen and then tells others about it.

Testimony in Law

In a courtroom, when someone tells what they know about a case, that's called testimony. It's a type of evidence. A person who gives testimony is called a witness. They share facts they know, either by speaking or in writing.

Usually, a witness has to promise to tell the truth. This promise is called an oath or an affirmation. If someone lies after making this promise, it's a serious crime called perjury.

Testimony in Religion

In Christian faiths, especially in the Evangelical tradition, people often "give their testimony." This means they share their personal story about how they became a Christian. It's a way for them to talk about their beliefs and experiences.
