Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Snyder Truex (born October 2, 1819 – died September 5, 1889) was an important American soldier. He served in two major conflicts for the United States: the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. During the Civil War, he rose through the ranks, showing great leadership and courage. He eventually earned a special honor, becoming a brevet brigadier general.

Early Life and Military Beginnings

William Snyder Truex was born on October 2, 1819. Not much is known about his early life before he joined the military. His first major service was during the Mexican–American War. This war took place from 1846 to 1848 between the United States and Mexico. Truex gained valuable experience as a soldier during this conflict.

Service in the American Civil War

The American Civil War was a very difficult time in American history, lasting from 1861 to 1865. It was a war fought between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states (the Confederacy). William S. Truex chose to fight for the Union side.

He started his service in the war as a major with the 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. A major is an officer rank, showing he was already a leader. As the war continued, he was promoted. He became a lieutenant colonel with the 10th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Later, he was promoted again to colonel, leading the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. A colonel is a very high rank, meaning he was in charge of many soldiers.

What is a Brevet General?

On April 2, 1865, William S. Truex received a special honor. He was appointed a brevet brigadier general. A "brevet" rank is a temporary or honorary promotion. It is given to recognize a soldier's bravery, skill, or important service, especially during wartime. Even though it might not have come with the full pay or command of a regular brigadier general, it was a huge recognition of his achievements and leadership during the Civil War.

William Snyder Truex passed away on September 5, 1889. He is remembered for his dedication and service to the United States during a critical period in its history.
