Winthrop is a community in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is an area that the government counts for population information. Winthrop is the main part of the larger Town of Winthrop. In 2010, about 2,650 people lived in the Winthrop CDP. The whole town of Winthrop had 6,092 residents.

Exploring Winthrop's Location
Winthrop is found in the southwestern part of Kennebec County. It sits right in the middle of the larger Town of Winthrop. This area is part of the Winthrop Lakes Region.
Lakes and Waterways
The community is located between two lakes. These are Maranacook Lake and Annabessacook Lake. A stream connects these two lakes. The stream drops about 40 feet over half a mile. The CDP also includes land around the village. This land reaches Upper Narrows Pond to the east. It goes south along Annabessacook Lake. It also extends north up Maranacook Lake to the Readfield town line.
Major Roads and Travel
Several important roads pass through Winthrop. U.S. Route 202 goes through the center of the CDP. It is joined by Route 11 and Route 100. Route 202 travels east about 10 miles to Augusta. Augusta is the capital city of Maine. Route 202 also goes southwest about 19 miles to Lewiston.
Other routes, Route 41 and Route 133, go through the village center. Route 41 heads north about 6 miles to Readfield. Route 133 goes northwest about 17 miles to Livermore Falls.
Area Size and Water Features
The Winthrop CDP covers a total area of about 7.2 square miles (18.7 square kilometers). About 5.5 square miles (14.4 square kilometers) of this is land. The rest, about 1.6 square miles (4.2 square kilometers), is water. This means water makes up about 22.58% of the area. The lakes in Winthrop are part of a larger water system. This system drains into Cobbosseecontee Lake and then into the Kennebec River at Gardiner.
