History of Aibonito
After the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico was given by Spain to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special area of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,606 people lived in the Aibonito barrio at that time.
