The sanguine poison frog or Zaparo's poison frog (Allobates zaparo) is a small, colorful frog. It belongs to a group of frogs called Aromobatidae. You can find this frog living in the warm, wet tropical rainforests of Ecuador and Peru.

About the Sanguine Poison Frog

This frog is known by two main names: the sanguine poison frog and Zaparo's poison frog. Its scientific name is Allobates zaparo. In Spanish, people call it rana venenosa, which means "poisonous frog."

These frogs are part of the Aromobatidae family. This family includes many types of small frogs. They are often found in Central and South America.

Where Does It Live?

The sanguine poison frog lives in the tropical rainforests of two South American countries: Ecuador and Peru. These forests are very dense and wet. They have many trees and plants. The frogs like to live among the leaves and plants on the forest floor.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Like many frogs, the sanguine poison frog starts its life as an egg. The female frog lays her eggs in the damp leaf litter on the forest ground. This leaf litter is made of fallen leaves and other plant parts. It helps keep the eggs safe and moist.

Once the eggs hatch, tiny tadpoles emerge. The parent frog then carries these young tadpoles on its back. It takes them to a small pool of water, like a puddle or a bromeliad plant. The tadpoles will grow and develop in this water until they are ready to become tiny frogs.

Scientific Name Changes

For a while, scientists thought this frog belonged to a different group, or genus, called Epipedobates. But after studying its DNA and other features, they learned more. They found that it was actually a better fit for the Allobates genus. This is why its full scientific name is now Allobates zaparo.
