Brooklyn Bottling Group facts for kids
The Brooklyn Bottling Group is one of the biggest family-owned companies in the United States that makes and sells drinks and food. It was started by Jack Miller in 1936. At first, he sold seltzers (bubbly water) and sweet syrups from a cart, going door to door in Brooklyn, New York.
The company grew when Jack's son, Arnold Miller, took over. In 1947, the family bought their first factory for bottling drinks. This allowed them to start making and selling their own soft drinks. Later, the third generation of the family, led by Eric Miller, added fruit juices to their list of products.
Today, The Brooklyn Bottling Group has a large factory in Milton, New York. They also have large warehouses in Brooklyn, Miami, Orlando, and Atlanta. From these locations, they send their products to 23 states, mostly along the East Coast of the United States. The company makes, sells, and imports more than 50 different brands of drinks, foods, and even household items.
A Difficult Time for the Company
In the early 1990s, the company faced a major problem. A harmful and untrue rumor was spread about its popular "Tropical Fantasy" soft drinks. People passed around flyers with false information designed to hurt the company's reputation, especially in Black communities.
The rumors claimed that a hate group secretly owned the company and that the drinks were harmful. These claims were completely false. The company had to work hard to prove the rumors were lies and to regain the trust of its customers. This event showed how quickly damaging misinformation can spread.
