Caonillas Abajo is a special kind of neighborhood called a barrio in the town of Utuado, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 965 people lived there. It's known for its beautiful natural areas, including parts of Lago Caonillas, a large lake.

Becoming Part of the United States

Puerto Rico has a long and interesting history. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.

Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.

Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This first count showed that the population of the Caonillas barrio was 2,378 people.
