What is Cliffwood Hall?
Cliffwood Hall is found on the southwest side of Rebel Hill Road, which is also Maine State Route 180. It is a short distance south of where Rebel Hill Road meets Maine State Route 9. The hall stands right next to the Harold Allan Schoolhouse. Both buildings are owned by the local historical society.
A Look at the Building
The hall is a two-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The building sits on a strong granite foundation. It has a simple, classic style from the late 1800s.
The front of the building looks balanced and even. There is a double door in the middle. A small roof, held up by decorative brackets, covers these doors. On each side of the doors, there are single windows. Above the doors, you'll see two tall windows. On the sides of these, there are more tall windows. Even higher up, in the attic area, there are two regular-sized windows. All the windows have small decorative ledges above them.
Inside, on the first floor, there is an entrance area, a kitchen, and a large main hall. This main hall now holds museum exhibits. You can even see the old town hearse there, which was used to carry coffins. The upstairs part of the hall is mostly unfinished, except for its wooden floor.
From Social Spot to Town Hall
Cliffwood Hall was built in 1892. A group of people from the local community worked together to build it. They wanted a place for social gatherings and cultural events. Imagine dances, plays, and community meetings happening here!
In 1899, the town of Clifton bought the building. From then until 1999, it was used as the official town hall. This means it was where town offices were located. Important town meetings were held here, and people would come to vote in elections.
Cliffwood Hall Today
In 1999, the building was given to the Clifton Historical Society. Since then, it has been home to their museum. The museum helps people learn about the history of Clifton. It's a great place to see how things used to be in the town.
