Del Monte is a neighborhood in Monterey, California. Its name comes from the Spanish words meaning "Of The Mountain." This area used to be a separate community in Monterey County. It is located on the east side of Monterey, about 16 feet (5 meters) above sea level.

A Look Back: The History of Del Monte
Del Monte got its name from the famous Hotel Del Monte. This was a very fancy resort that is now the Naval Postgraduate School.
How Del Monte Began
The Hotel Del Monte was built by Charles Crocker. He was one of the "Big Four" railroad owners in California. His company, the Pacific Improvement Company (part of the Southern Pacific Railroad), created the resort. The first hotel opened in 1880. It was built near a train station on Monterey Bay.
What Was the Del Monte Resort Like?
The Del Monte resort was huge! It included:
- The grand hotel itself
- Beautiful parkland
- Polo grounds (for playing polo with horses)
- A golf course
- A race track
The property stretched out from the hotel. It had lovely gardens and more park areas. The Del Monte development also included a special scenic drive. This road went from the hotel to another part of the resort, Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach is on the Monterey Peninsula. A part of this old scenic drive is still used today. It is known as the 17-mile drive.
Del Monte's Post Office History
The Delmonte post office first opened at the Hotel Del Monte. This was from 1882 to 1883. Later, a new Del Monte post office opened in 1901. It closed for a short time in 1911. Then, it closed for good in 1951.
Becoming Part of Monterey
In 1948, the City of Monterey officially added Del Monte to its own area. This process is called annexation.
