The Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRVN), or less commonly, Vietnamese Democratic Republic (Vietnamese: Việt Nam Dân Chủ Cộng Hòa), also known as North Vietnam, is a former country that existed from 1945 until 1976. It was in the north of present-day Vietnam. It lay north of the local Demilitarized Zone, and South Vietnam lay to the south of it.

It was proclaimed by President Hồ Chí Minh in Hà Nội on September 2, 1945. It was the first socialist country in Southeast Asia. However, it was not recognised by China and the Soviet Union until 1950. North Vietnam took part in the Vietnam War.
