Dorothy Joan Harris, born on February 14, 1931, is a Canadian writer. She was born in Japan but now lives in Toronto, Canada. She is best known for writing books for children.

About Dorothy Joan Harris

Dorothy Joan Harris was born Dorothy Joan Langley in Kobe, Japan. Her family moved to St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, in 1938.

Her Education and Early Career

She studied modern languages at the University of Toronto. After graduating in 1952, she became an elementary school teacher. She taught in both France and Japan.

In 1954, she came back to Toronto. The next year, in 1955, she married Alan Harris. They have two children together.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Dorothy Harris worked as an editor. She helped prepare books for Copp Clark Publishers from 1955 to 1961. Later, she also worked as a public library assistant for many years.

Awards and Recognition

Dorothy Harris has received awards for her writing. In 1999, she contributed to a book called Too Young to Fight: Memories from our Youth During World War. This book won the BolognaRagazzi Award. This award is given at the Bologna Children's Book Fair.

Her book A Very Unusual Dog, published in 2004, was also recognized. It was nominated for a Chocolate Lily Award.
