The Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church is a very old and important church building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It stands at 1435 E. Fourth Street in Forsyth County, North Carolina. This beautiful church was first built in 1924. It has a special design called Classical Revival.

This church is known for its two tall, round towers. It also has a grand front porch with strong columns. The building became an important place for the African-American community in 1942. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This means it is a special historic site in the United States.

What Makes This Church Special?

The Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church is a great example of Classical Revival style. This style was popular for important buildings. It uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.

The Church's Design

The church building is made of brick. It has a front-gabled roof, which means the roof slopes down on the sides of the front. Two large, round towers stand out on the front. These towers have domes on top, like small hats.

The front of the church has a big porch. This porch has a triangular top, called a pediment. It is held up by columns. These columns are covered in stucco, a type of plaster. Inside, the church uses a special layout called the Akron Plan. This plan helps everyone see and hear the speaker well.

A Church with a Rich History

The building we see today was finished in 1924. It was first known as the East Fourth Street Baptist Church. Its history shows how communities grow and change over time.

How the Church Got Its Name

In 1942, a new group of people bought the church building. This group was an African-American congregation. They had separated from another church called the Goler Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. They wanted their own place to worship.

In 1953, this new congregation decided to change their name. They chose "Goler Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church." This name honored their connection to the original Goler Memorial church. It also showed their growth and importance in the community.

Why Is It a Historic Place?

The Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the building. It also helps people learn about its past.
