What the Church Looks Like

The church building was finished in 1924. It is made of brick. It has a special style called Classical Revival. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek or Roman buildings. The front of the church has two tall towers with round tops. It also has smaller sections on the sides.

The main entrance has a large porch. This porch is supported by strong columns. These columns are covered in a smooth material called stucco. The inside of the church is designed in a way that helps everyone see and hear well. This design is called the Akron Plan.

A Rich History

The church was first known as East Fourth Street Baptist Church. In 1942, a group of African American church members bought the building. They had separated from another church called Goler Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.

In 1953, this new group changed their name. They decided to call themselves Goler Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church. This name honored their connection to the earlier Goler Memorial Church.

National Recognition

Because of its important history and unique architecture, Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church was recognized nationally. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This list includes buildings and places that are important to the history of the United States. Being on this list helps protect the church for future generations.
