Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gustavo Envela-Makongo Sr. was an important diplomat from Equatorial Guinea, a country in Africa. He was born in a place called Spanish Guinea, which is what Equatorial Guinea was called before it became independent. He became his country's very first ambassador to the United Nations. An ambassador is like a special representative who works to build good relationships between their country and other countries around the world. The United Nations is a big organization where countries work together for peace and human rights.

In 1970, Mr. Envela-Makongo decided to leave his job. He disagreed with some of the government's rules, especially about people being able to speak freely and about basic human rights. Because of growing political problems in his home country, Mr. Envela-Makongo and his family had to leave. They moved to the United States and made a new home in Salem, Oregon.

After moving to the U.S., Gustavo Envela-Makongo Sr. worked for the State of Oregon. He also helped raise his family, which included one daughter and five sons.

One of his sons, Gus Envela Jr., who went to Stanford University, later became well-known. In the year 2000, Gus Envela Jr. announced that he planned to run for president of Equatorial Guinea.
