Higgins Point was a busy place during the California Gold Rush! It was a small mining camp located in El Dorado County, California. You could find it about half a mile west of another town called Salmon Falls. This spot got its name from an Australian man named Higgins, who was the first to open a store there.
Discovering Gold at Higgins Point
In 1849, something exciting happened at Higgins Point. A group of people called Mormons found lots of gold there! These areas where gold was found were known as "diggings." The gold found at Higgins Point was very rich, meaning there was a lot of it.
How Higgins Point Became a Town
Because of the gold discovery, more people came to Higgins Point. It was the first part of the Salmon Falls area to be planned out as a town. This planning started in 1853. People hoped it would grow into a big, important settlement during the Gold Rush.
