Description: The 1605 "graffiti" on Inscription Rock, by Juan de Oñate, the colonial governor of the Santa Fe de Nuevo México province in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. It is the oldest inscription at El Morro National Monument, New Mexico. The inscription reads: "Paso por aq[u]i el adelantado don ju/an oñate del descubrimiento de la mar del sur a 16 de Abril del 1605." Showing 'historic' vandalism to the inscription, at left there is "Casados/1727" and "J[ose?]parelo". On right, "P. Joseph de la Candelaria."
