Description: This 1968 photograph, taken during the Nigerian-Biafran civil war inside a refugee camp, highlighted a corn soya milk (CSM) mixture that was being cooked into a bread-like food. CSM was a highly prized, protein enriched food distributed primarily to the numerous kwashiorkor stricken children during the Nigerian-Biafran war. The National Communicable Disease Center (NCDC) helped to treat the 500,000 cases of malnutrition, by setting up food distribution centers and clinics in refugee relief camps surrounding the Nigerian war zone. Protein enriched foods, like dried codfish (PHIL 7144) and powdered milk (PHIL 7142), were made available to the children suffering with the protein-calorie malnutrition disease known as kwashiorkor.
