Description: During the 1987 San Francisco Historic Trolley Festival, ex-Market Street Railway car 578 (built in 1895 or 1896) is laying over on the Embarcadero across from Pier 39, during a six-week demonstration streetcar service along the Embarcadero (Sep. 11 to Oct. 17, 1987). Because there was no regular streetcar service here at the time, the demo service ran along disused freight tracks of the San Francisco Belt Railroad, and the electricity to power the car's motor came from a diesel-powered generator on a cart attached to the streetcar's south/east end. Note the temporary wooden sign on the loading island, reading "Board trolley here for Embarcadero Center".
