Description: The Alcazar Theatre at 650 Geary Street between Jones and Leavenworth Streets in the Theatre District of San Francisco, California, was originally built as the Islam Shriner's Temple in 1917, and was designed by T, Patterson Rose in the Exotic Revival style. The building remained a temple until 1970, then after the Alcazar Theatre at 260 O'Farrell Street (1911) closed in 1961 and was torn down, the temple was converted into a legitimate theatre, which opened in 1976 under the same name. It was gutted by fire in 1982, and re-opened in 1993. The theatre seats 511, and hosts touring productions of Off-Broadway and Broadway plays as well as other theatrical events. The building was designated a San Francisco Landmark on October 18, 1989.
