Description: The California Historical Society based at 678 Mission Street at the corner of Annie Street in the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood of San Francisco, California is a museum and research library which has state and regional history archives. There were four attempts to create a California Historical Society: in 1871, from 1886 to 1891, from 1902 to 1906, and, finally, in 1922, it was permanently founded by C. Templeton Crocker, the grandson of Charles Crocker. In 1979 the organization became the official state historical society, and in 1993 it purchased and moved into its current headquarters, the former San Francisco Builders Exchange. The exterior of the building is painted the same color as the Golden Gate Bridge, International Orange. (Source: CHS website)
