Description: Eastward view of the National Mall from the top of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., between 1916 and 1918. At far left is Center Market, with the rotunda-topped National Museum of Natural History to its right. The three structures and two chimneys in the between 7th and 9th Streets crossing the Mall are temporary U.S. Department of War buildings and their associated heating plant. In the center distance is the United States Capitol and, beyond it, the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. Center-right is the Smithsonian Institution main building (the Smithsonian Castle), and just to the rear of it the Arts & Industries Building. The Freer Gallery of Art, which began construction in 1916 and was finished in 1922, is undergoing construction to the lower-right of the Castle. Lower-right are the four buildings which, at the time, made up the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
