It was used as a generator, connected by belt drive to a six-foot Pelton water wheel driven by water from water from the San Miguel River. It produced 3000 volt, 133 Hertz, single phase alternating current to drive a similar alternator connected by copper power line s 2.6 miles (4.2 km) that acted as a motor to drive a stamp mill at the Gold King Mine. It replaced an existing steam mill that was difficult to run because of a lack of timber to use as fuel.
