Description: Artists conception of the Annis Mound and Village Site (15BT2, 15BT20, & l5BT21) circa 1250-1300 CE. Annis is a Middle Mississippian culture archaeological site located on the bank of the Green River in Butler County, Kentucky. It was occupied from about 800 CE to about 1300 CE. The site consisted of a Mississippian culture platform mound measuring 33.5 meters (110 ft) square by 3.7 meters (12 ft) in height, and domestic structures surrounded by an encircling defensive palisade. Just outside the northern palisade was a much older circular burial mound from the Woodland period known as the Annis Sand Mound (15BT21), measuring about 1 meter in height and approximately 35 x 30 meters in diameter. Agriculture was based on the cultivation of maize as a staple.
