Description: Archaeological excavation under way at the Castle Watergate, Southampton. Normally you can pass through the Castle Watergate from Western Esplanade, but on this occasion the gate was shut due to an archaeological excavation. The Watergate was built in the late 14th century to limit access from Castle Quay into the interior of the castle. The tidal waters are now about half a kilometre away, a consequence of land reclamation from the mid-nineteenth century onwards.
